Drum Building

Drum Building!

Join us and learn to build your own drum, and have lots of fun in the process!

One of the biggest obstacles for any taiko group in North America is the acquisition of drums. Drums produced in Japan cost thousands of dollars apiece and with shipping, you can imagine how cost prohibitive that can be.

So, we make our own drums from old wine barrels and stretched rawhide!

The majority of drums Tucson Taiko Kyokai uses were lovingly hand-made by members of the group. It is a dirty, sweaty, back breaking process but you can see what wonderful results come of that labor.

We start by stripping the old wine barrels and reassembling the staves with biscuits...

We then groove out the tops, put in a plywood reinforcing ring and then sand, sand, sand...

Next comes the exterior staining and protective clear coat...

and then we stretch the skins and then stretch them some more!
